According to its official website, Barclays is a banking group headquartered at 1 Churchill Place, London, tracing its ancestry back to the goldsmith bankers John Freame and Thomas Gould, who were doing business in Lombard Street, London, in 1690. The group describes itself as a diversified bank with comprehensive UK consumer, corporate, wealth and private banking franchises, a leading investment bank and a specialist US consumer bank. The group's two UK deposit-taking banks are Barclays Bank UK PLC and Barclays Bank PLC; the site and the FCA register show that both are authorised by the PRA and regulated by the FCA and the PRA, and both appear on the Bank of England list. Through barclays.co.uk it offers current accounts, savings accounts and ISAs, Barclaycard credit cards, mortgages, loans and insurance via online banking and the Barclays app; some savings accounts can be opened with balances from GBP 1. The site states that eligible deposits with Barclays Bank PLC are protected by the FSCS. The group's South African entity Barclays Bank PLC (FSP 50570) holds a financial services provider licence from the FSCA. This information is the company's own statement.
