According to its official website, Mattercap is a Cape Town-based financial technology group active in digital asset market making, regulated OTC trading, investment services and rapid crypto-to-rand conversion and settlement. The group consists of a proprietary trading firm and an FSCA-regulated financial services provider; it says it provides liquidity on South African and international exchanges. Founded in 2022, the group's subsidiary Mattercap Investments (Pty) Ltd obtained its Category I and II FSP authorisation in 2024; all regulated activities, including the OTC desk and MatterPay, are performed exclusively by that company, which is a registered accountable institution with the Financial Intelligence Centre. The OTC desk offers institutions, high-volume individuals and crypto treasury companies 24/7 pricing and execution via WebSocket and REST API. MatterPay converts USDT, USDC, BTC, ETH and more than 40 other crypto-assets into rand for real estate, vehicle and other high-value purchases; the site stresses that it is not a payment system.
