According to its official website, Nium is a cross-border payments infrastructure company founded in 2014 by Prajit Nanu and Michael Bermingham as the consumer remittance platform Instarem and renamed in 2019; it is co-headquartered in Singapore and San Francisco, has more than 750 staff, and London is among its offices. According to its licences page the group is licensed in 40 countries; in the United Kingdom, Nium Fintech Limited (901024) and Nium Payments UK Limited (900800) are authorised by the FCA under the Electronic Money Regulations, and Nium Solutions Limited under the Payment Services Regulations (721549). The group also says it operates through UAB Nium EU in Lithuania (electronic money institution, licence No. 14), Nium Pty Limited in Australia (AFSL 464627), NIUM Pte. Ltd. in Singapore (Major Payment Institution), and licences or registrations in Malta, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brazil, Canada, New Zealand and the United States.
