According to its official website, People First Bank is a trading name of Heritage and People's Choice Ltd; Heritage Bank and People's Choice Credit Union are also trading names of the same company. Heritage Bank and People's Choice merged in March 2023 to create one of Australia's largest customer-owned banks, and the People First Bank brand officially launched on 5 May 2026. During the transition the Heritage Bank brand and the heritage.com.au website continue to serve customers through branches in Queensland and New South Wales; the site says the People's Choice branches and the Toowoomba head office moved to the new brand in 2025. Heritage's origins go back to the Toowoomba Permanent Building Society, established in 1875. The bank stresses that it is 100% customer-owned; its products include home and personal loans, savings accounts including Dream Fund, term deposits from 1,000 AUD and transaction accounts.
