According to its official website, Progressive Building Society was formed from the merger of five small societies and first opened its doors under the 'Progressive' name in 1914; it is a mutual building society based in Belfast that says it has no external shareholders and that every savings or mortgage customer is a member. It describes itself as Northern Ireland's largest locally owned financial institution, with 11 branches across Northern Ireland and almost 200 staff; its head office is at 33-37 Wellington Place, Belfast.
