According to its official website, First Rate is the United Kingdom's leading supplier of white label foreign currency, serving companies in finance, travel and retail and, through them, their customers. The company was formed in 1994 when Bank of Ireland started supplying foreign exchange services to the Post Office, and became a joint venture of the Post Office and Bank of Ireland Group in 2002; it describes itself as one of the world's top five currency wholesalers. Its products are foreign currency in more than 60 currencies sold by partners under their own brand (online orders with home delivery or branch collection), Mastercard-branded multi-currency prepaid travel cards and wholesale banknote supply to bureaux at airports and ports; its clients include the Post Office Travel Money services. The site says the company operates as a money service business (MSB) supervised by HMRC and is an Authorised Electronic Money Institution regulated by the FCA (900412); it adds that it obtained an e-money licence in 2016 and is a principal member of Mastercard. The head office is at Botanica, Ditton Park, Datchet. This information is the company's own statement.

The complaint distribution is based on the 1-star reviews on First Rate Exchange Services' Trustpilot page (5) as of 8 October 2026; one person's reviews count once, and records about fake sites and third parties using the First Rate name are left out. Across the complaints, currency orders not delivered on time and slow refunds, exchange rates seen as poor and allegations that complaints are passed on to partners stand out.
