According to its official website, Progressive Building Society was formed from the merger of five small societies and first opened its doors under the 'Progressive' name in 1914; it is a mutual building society based in Belfast that says it has no external shareholders and that every savings or mortgage customer is a member. It describes itself as Northern Ireland's largest locally owned financial institution, with 11 branches across Northern Ireland and almost 200 staff; its head office is at 33-37 Wellington Place, Belfast. For personal savers it offers online and branch instant access accounts, fixed rate bonds, Cash ISAs, regular savers, a first home saver account and children's accounts; for businesses it offers fixed and variable rate bonds, instant access and 90-day notice accounts. Its mortgages cover house purchase, remortgage, self-build, renovation and co-ownership, and it says it only lends on property in Northern Ireland. Accounts can be opened with GBP 1. According to the Bank of England list and the FCA register, it is authorised by the PRA and regulated by the FCA and the PRA; the site states that it is a subscriber to the FSCS.
