According to its official website, The Mutual Bank is the trading name of Maitland Mutual Limited. It was founded in 1888 by Maitland locals as The Maitland Permanent Building, Investment and Loan Society Limited and Savings Bank to keep local money invested in the Hunter community, and made its first loan on 16 January 1889; it later returned the word 'bank' to its trading name. As a member-owned institution with no shareholders, it says its profits are reinvested for the benefit of members and that it has more than 1 billion AUD in assets under management; it serves Maitland, Newcastle and the Hunter Region.
