According to its official website, Traditional Credit Union (TCU) is the trading name of Traditional Credit Union Limited and describes itself as Australia's only Indigenous-owned credit union. The site describes its purpose as providing essential banking services, financial and digital literacy and employment to First Nations people in remote areas of Northern Australia. Its head office is in Casuarina, Darwin; it runs twelve branches in remote communities of the Northern Territory and a service centre in Katherine. It offers personal customers Everyday Transaction, Budget, Christmas Club, family / clan / group, student, child and TCU Online accounts as well as term deposits; a term deposit of 3 months or more requires at least AUD 500. Personal loans are normally limited to AUD 5,000 over up to 2 years, and there are separate accounts for businesses and benevolent organisations. TCU is a Commonwealth Government approved issuer of the SmartCard and SmartCard Account under the enhanced Income Management program.
