According to its official website, Tyro is the brand of Tyro Payments Limited and was founded in 2003 by Paul Wood, Peter Haig and Andrew Rothwell in response to the Reserve Bank of Australia's call for greater competition in payments. The company says it became Australia's first new entrant into the EFTPOS market in over a decade in 2005 and, in 2016, the first technology company to obtain a full Australian banking licence and operate as an authorised deposit-taking institution (ADI); it listed on the ASX in 2019. It is headquartered in Sydney. The site states that it serves more than 77,800 businesses and processed AUD 44.3 billion in payments in FY26. Its products are EFTPOS terminals, Tap to Pay, online payments and payment links, more than 580 POS/PMS integrations, a business transaction account with same day settlement and no minimum balance plus a Visa Debit card, business loans, business term deposits from AUD 1,000 and Tyro Accounting software.
