According to its official website, HSBC UK is the UK retail and business banking brand of the HSBC group, founded in Hong Kong in 1865. HSBC UK Bank plc is a ring-fenced bank headquartered in Birmingham and wholly owned by HSBC Holdings plc; the site says it serves more than 15 million active customers and covers the HSBC UK, first direct and M&S brands. The bank offers personal customers current accounts (Bank Account, Premier, student and children's accounts), savings accounts and ISAs, credit cards, loans, mortgages, investments and insurance, and offers business banking from small and medium-sized companies to large corporates. The group's non-ring-fenced bank, HSBC Bank plc (London, 8 Canada Square), provides banking to corporate and institutional clients. According to the Bank of England list and the FCA register, both entities are authorised by the PRA to accept deposits and are regulated by the FCA and the PRA. The site says eligible deposits with HSBC UK Bank plc are protected by the FSCS up to 120,000 GBP. The group's Australian entities THE HONGKONG AND SHANGHAI BANKING CORPORATION LIMITED (AFSL 301737) and HSBC BANK AUSTRALIA LIMITED (AFSL 232595) hold AFS licences from ASIC.
