According to its official website, Shieldpay is a London-based payments company founded in 2016 by its founder Peter Janes to make complex payments simple and secure, starting with a digital escrow service. The site presents it as an FCA-regulated legal payments platform for UK law firms; its services are aimed at business clients, mainly law firms. Its main solutions are payment distribution in mergers and acquisitions (M&A), compensation payouts in group litigation, conditional fund holding (escrow), paying agent services for payments to multiple payees and third-party managed accounts (Payment Account / TPMA) offered as an alternative to traditional client accounts; real estate, construction and conveyancing transactions are also listed as use cases. The process consists of identity checks (KYC) and due diligence on the parties, holding funds in safeguarded accounts with Citi and ClearBank, and paying out on instruction. The site says it has processed more than £18 billion in transactions and works with more than 40 of the UK's top 100 law firms. Its regulatory notice states that Shieldpay Ltd is authorised by the FCA under the Payment Services Regulations 2017 (FRN 770210) and that the group company Shieldpay Trustee Services Limited is registered with HMRC as a trust services provider for anti-money laundering purposes. This information is the company's own statement.

The complaint distribution is based on the 1-star reviews on Shieldpay's Trustpilot page (67) as of 8 October 2026; one person's reviews count once, and records about fake sites and third parties using the Shieldpay name are left out. Across the complaints, delayed compensation and settlement payouts, a difficult bank account verification step before payment and unanswered communication stand out.
